Stone columns can be installed through soft clays and peat but depending upon the thickness and cohesion of such layers, a column could fail under loading. In order to avoid this, PENNINE have developed Grouted Stone Columns. By using the bottom feed system, columns can be constructed using stone of a selected grading, which has been coated with a cementitious grout or mortar. The column is formed in the same way as a standard stone column; i.e. successive charges of stone are delivered via the bottom feed tube and are then packed with the poker to form a dense column of interlocked stone. The presence of the cement coating enables a cementitious bond to form, thereby maintaining the integrity of the column through very soft ground. When formed in this manner the stone columns are less permeable and will prevent the leachate of contaminants from higher levels into underlying aquifers. Why use Grouted Stone Columns?
PENNINE are at the forefront of developing new systems and variations to existing ones – this is especially important where brownfield site developments are concerned. |
