Dynamic Compaction (DC) uses the energy of a falling weight between 8-15 tonnes landing in free fall from heights of up to 20m. The number of drops, weights required, number of passes and height of drops all depend on the required post treatment bearing capacity and necessary settlement performance combined with the soil conditions. Although the method is often underrated due to its low-tech appearance there is a skill associated with its use, in anticipating and recognising the behaviour of soils before and during treatment. The method is cheap and is ideal for large sites where obstructions are present or contaminated sites where the expense of removing contaminated soil is to be avoided. DC is appropriate for most unsaturated soil types and depths of 7-8m can be treated. Generally DC is not used within 30-50m of existing structures, however, where vibration sensitive structures are present a combination of DC/RIC/Vibro can be used. |
