Pennine Put in the Groundwork on Home Turf

We don’t often get to work so close to our Bacup home, but last month saw one of our teams begin a project only 20 miles away from the HQ on the site of a former manufacturing warehouse in Manchester.

Working for Anglo Holt on the £76,000 contract, we installed 3,397 vibro stone columns to depths of up to 3 metres. With the old warehouse and foundations already removed before we arrived on-site, our 3 man team used their specially adapted excavator mounted rig over 26 days, to create a bearing capacity of up to 150 kN/m2, in preparation for the construction of five new industrial units.

This Manchester-based contract comes at the same time as Claire Garrett’s promotion to business development engineer for the North – a move that signifies the strengthening of Pennine’s nationwide outfit, and demonstrates the regional capabilities of the offices.

Claire said: “Pennine is renowned for providing ground improvement solutions in every corner of the globe, for example at the Port of Valencia, and more recently on Palm Jumeirah in the Emirates, so to be working so close to base is a real novelty.

“I hope that in my new role I am able to strengthen Pennine’s presence and expand upon the services offered to clients in areas all over the North of the country.”

Ground-Breaking Appointments for Pennine

We are continuing to strengthen our reputable team, with the appointment of five new members of staff.

Speaking of the recent recruitment drive, technical director Marc Evans said: “These new appointments signify the strengthening of our nationwide team of specialists, and highlight how determined we are to effectively allocate resources to each of our regional offices in Milton Keynes, Stirling, and Gloucester.

“We encourage both graduates and undergraduates onto the team, as we know the potential they have to offer. Claire Garrett, who graduated in 2003 with a degree in geography and geology is our most recent success story, having recently been promoted to business development manager for the North.”

Stephanie Pegg joined Pennine after completing her A-levels. Now, while studying for her civil engineering degree, Stephanie will train as estimator for the North, working alongside Claire.

Fellow undergraduate Nick Smethurst – a former accountant – has also just started a civil engineering degree sponsored by Pennine, and will be based in the technical department at the Bacup headquarters.

The third undergraduate to join the company this summer – James Airey – will study construction management while training in the commercial department.

Pennine’s Scottish office has a new estimator Greg Anton, a graduate in geo-science and Nicola Newman, an environmental earth science graduate, will shortly be making the move to Gloucester, to also work as an estimator for that region.
