Band Drains consist of an extruded flexible plastic core some 75mm x 4mm formed as a fluted section, this is enveloped in a geotextile filter fabric sleeve. The drains, up to 18m in depth, are installed through a hollow mandrel driven into the soil, the mandrel is then withdrawn and the drain cut. The process is then repeated, typically in a 1-1.5m triangular grid pattern. The drain 'heads' are embedded in a granular drainage layer and the embankment or temporary surcharge is placed on top.

Why use Band Drains?

to treat thick deposits of soft and very soft alluvial clays

to economically treat large areas where upfilling or reclamation is taking place

to accelerate consolidation settlements beneath road/rail embankments
