Band Drains consist of an extruded flexible plastic core some 75mm x 4mm formed as a fluted section, this is enveloped in a geotextile filter fabric sleeve. The drains, up to 18m in depth, are installed through a hollow mandrel driven into the soil, the mandrel is then withdrawn and the drain cut. The process is then repeated, typically in a 1-1.5m triangular grid pattern. The drain 'heads' are embedded in a granular drainage layer and the embankment or temporary surcharge is placed on top. Why use Band Drains?
